Using the LOC Sanborn Map collection

The Library of Congress has digitized 25,000 Sanborn fire insurance maps, with many more coming in the next 3 years. The maps give you some idea of what your ancestor's home and  neighborhood were like.  This article explains how to use them.

US Navy Muster Rolls

The National Archives has partnered with 3 other organizations to digitize Navy muster rolls , providing the names and personal data of enlisted crewmen on various ships from 1861 through 1879. The list includes escaped slaves who served in the Union Navy during the Civil War.

If you haven't used the FamilySearch free online archives recently, you should know that they have added 15 million new records from many countries, as well as some U.S. States.

Genetic genealogy helped indentify a Maryland man, 56 years after his death and 34 years after his remains were discovered.

This is an excellent resource for Florida  Genealogy- a listing of the genealogy material at the State Library. Most are available via inter-library loan. Ask about it at the HCPL branch you go to.

Census Records post-1940

U.S. census records are kept confidential for 72 years. The last one made public was the 1940 census; the 1950 census will be released in 2022. Read here about how to obtain records that have not yet been released.
